Tunnel 6b. We've split the growing area into three distinct zones. We composted this tunnel about 12 days ago. We pulled back the covers, and this is the result. It's great to see the microbes working on the decomposition process. The beds should be rocking come springtime.

Building a germination chamber. Another project I've been meaning to do over the years. But, I have the time at present. We bought the shelving units from Lidl. Cost 30 quid in total. Germination chambers cost €3k plus. Everything else we had on the farm.
The frame from our landlords, they used it as a form when they put the new cattle grid in.
The rest is just pallet wood, thermal foil, and hardboard insulation.
We had to join the two shelving units together and reinforce them with some spare channel lock we took from old door frames from our caterpillar tunnels. The bars are extra steel we had from making the gutter systems for the fruit tunnels. We had 4.5 x 6m rods (6mm) lying around. We drilled the ends and have two bars per shelf. We added cross brace bars to stop them sagging under the tray weight.
There will be 21 paperpot sized trays per load in there. Lettuce should germinate between 48 and 72hrs at 22.5c. We could add more, but it makes more ergonomic sense to allow better airflow and uniformity of moisture throughout the chamber.

Germination chambers are exactly that, a highly controlled space where temperature and humidity levels are optimised to hasten and increase uniformity of germination. Notably early in the season. It will also act as a healing chamber for grafting.

IMO4 pile at 132 hours. This is probably the best pile I've made over the years. Temperatures are still at 31c, but it went to 46c, which I'm happy about.
We probably won't need to turn it again until we need it, which will be in a few days. We'll apply when covering the last of the beds.

0.6 m3 of IMO4. 36 hours after making pile. Inoculation rate is high. Temperature warm but within acceptable range. It's a solid start. The next couple of days should be the most critical.
I'm uncertain if I will turn the pile today. I may leave it, depending on the temperature, I'll use a probe to clarify.
Otherwise, I'm quite happy with the progress.

The volume of the pile is .6m3. It doesn't sound like much, but when you have to turn it, it takes a while.
That should cover the remaining tunnels . I'll make more in the spring and add a week or so prior to transplanting.

We have one tunnel left after this, so we're ahead of schedule. I haven't really thought about it, but we scraped through this year by the skin of our teeth. It's been very stressful and, at times, overwhelming (internally), but one has to just grind it out.
We'll have 22 tunnels of beds prepped, which contain 6 beds each. That's a total of 132 beds made by hand. Weeded, destoned, compost applied, and biology applied. 11 tunnels are fully up, but two were damaged, so we've repaired them but will wait until spring to re-skin them.
These 9 tunnels will be covered in the spring. Guttering will also be done in the spring. It will take about two weeks to have them fully set up.

IMO3 pile from Saturday's class (19th October). Nice bloo. The pile from th class on the 12th was still active yesterday, which was surprising. That was 12 days since the pile began. It's not overly warm but still in the high 20s. There must have been some moisture left. However, that pile looks great, too.
We'll start making making another IMO4 pile next week.

Wind damage. Two tunnels. Can be repaired.
But we made a mistake. They were the first tunnels we put up. But the second line of posts were not augered in. There is an old stone footpath, which we had to drive the posts in through a box section sleeve. However, the wind just pulled them up and then the covers and Ridge bars got damaged.
We'll spend the next few days repairing.

Garlic planted in the rain today. 1,000 bulbs or thereabouts. Messidor variety. 6" spacing in either direction. We will cover this tunnel in March, most likely.
The three tunnels 5,6 & 7 are our winter mix. Tunnels 1 & 2 are still in their infancy, and 3 & 4 are a mix of harvested and ready to be harvested.

The strong winds over the weekend showed us where the wind is likely to cause the most damage.
I'm unconcerned about other wind directions as the walls will protect the tunnels. However, the entrance to the garden seems to funnel the wind. Therefore, we decided to use pallets to break the wind in stages. I'll see how this works and change if required. But it is a very simple and quick way to erect a fence. Each one took only 30 minutes or so to erect.

A tale of three piles. So we made three separate piles of IMO3 based on the first being a mixture of all my collections over the years.
The second was the newer collections that were more fungal dominated.
The third was last year's collections due to them being the best collections we have captured so far.

You'll notice the difference in colours between them all. Some light and some darker. The darker piles are the more mixed collection and the lighter the single collections (based on year).
The final pile was done with my first KNF class.
I decided to mix them all together to make IMO4.
20 hours after mixing, they're already very active, so we turned this morning. It was cold, wet, and very windy last night. This pile is under an old sycamore tree.
I'm delighted with the process so far. The pile smells good, like an old forest floor. BTW, I took my son out to the forest two weeks ago to collect fungi that were easily available. We collected about a dozen or so handfuls of good mycellium from different locations. We also threw half of those in the pile.
I am looking forward to the result in a week's time.
We'll use this batch straight away on the new beds we're making and keep making IMOs throughout the winter. We'll need about 600kg per acre, so in total, I'll apply over a 1000kg including what I have already.
I have applied about 200kg so far, and this pile is about 200kg.

It was a dull and quite cold day today. These are the first two tunnels being prepared. The first is for garlic and onions. The second, I haven't yet decided. One can notice in the second tunnel (minus compost) that the scutch grass is quite present. It needs a tine weeding, after which we will apply compost, biology and then cover. We'll remove the covers periodically to allow the soil to breathe.
The first tunnel (compost being applied) had biology (#IMO4) applied and then covered with mypex. These beds will be left outside over winter. A cover for the tunnel will be skinned in late February or early March, depending on how many storms are looming.
Onions will be set once the cover is on (possibly 10 days after, so as to warm up the soil).
